About John Hawkins
I have been working with adults, teenagers, and families since 1986, when I received my masters degree in Community/Mental Health Counseling from the Department of Counseling at Mississippi State University. In 1988, I returned to graduate school to obtain an
educational specialist (Ed.S.) degree in school counseling. I spent thirteen rewarding years working as a counselor at the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science, a public, residential, magnet, high school for academically talented and gifted juniors and seniors. I then spent three years as a psychotherapist at the Mississippi State University Counseling Center followed by two years as a counselor at the Mississippi School for the Arts, a public, residential magnet, high school for creatively gifted juniors and seniors. I am currently an instructor in the Department of Counselor Education at Delta State University. I have maintained a private counseling practice since 2002.
I am a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and a National Certified School Counselor (NCSC), certified by the National Board for Certified Counselors, a private certifying agency that recognizes counselors who have distinguished themselves through meeting the board's rigorous standards for education, knowledge, and experience. I am a member of the American Counseling Association, Mississippi Counseling Association, the Mississippi School Counselor Associaton, the Mississippi Licensed Professional Counselors Association, the North American Society of Adlerian Psychology, and the American School Counseling Association. I am currently the president of the Mississippi Society of Adlerian Counseling. In addition to my graduate education, I have had additional training in Positive Psychology, Adlerian Psychotherapy, Stress Management, Internal Family Systems Therapy, Counseling and Spirituality, Solution-Oriented Brief Therapy, Theophostic Counseling, and Neuro-Linguistic Programming.
